Hôtel Avenir Jonquière, on Jonquière Street, a stone’s throw from Guy Môquet station. Exit the метро, line 13, and it only takes a couple of minutes of counting the building numbers on the façades to find it.

The 17th arrondissement here is nothing like postcard Paris. Haussmann buildings stand alongside more recent façades, bakeries open early, and regulars greet each other at the counter of the local cafés. Montmartre is a quarter of an hour away by метро, Porte Maillot and Batignolles just a few stops away. This is a neighborhood that lives its own life.

The reception never closes. Day and night, someone answers, in French, in English, sometimes in Arabic. Late arrivals or departures before dawn are not a problem, and express check-in saves time for those who have a flight to catch.

As you go up the floors, the tone changes. The rooms are plain, single or double, between 9 and 12 square meters. You shouldn’t expect a lounge, but the space is optimized to the centimeter: built-in storage, a compact bathroom with shower and hairdryer, flat-screen TV, electrical outlet near the bed. No frills, but nothing is missing either for one or two nights.

One detail to know before booking: out of the hotel’s roughly twenty rooms, a handful do not have private bathrooms. If an in-room bathroom matters to you, it is better to mention it when booking.

Breakfast is served in the dining room on the ground floor, or in the room if requested the day before. Nothing extraordinary on the menu, bread, pastries, coffee, but served by a team that takes turns without ever losing patience.

In terms of accessibility, the property welcomes people with reduced mobility, but not wheelchairs. It is the kind of detail you would rather read before leaving than discover on site.

In the evening, Jonquière Street becomes quiet again. The windows overlooking the inner courtyard cut off almost all street noise, and a door even separates the floors from the stairwell so that neighbors’ footsteps do not rise all the way to the rooms.

A tip, if you sleep late: ask for a courtyard-facing room when booking, and let them know the day before if you want breakfast in your room; service starts at 7 a.m.
