On the ground floor, the reception does not try to impress. A desk, a manager who already knows the names of the regulars, and that distinctly Parisian way of solving a problem in three sentences rather than with a salesy smile. People ask for directions to Canal Saint-Martin or the Opéra Bastille, and the answer comes straight away, often with a shortcut that the guidebooks do not mention.

The twenty-two rooms are spread over several floors of an old Marais building, and it has to be said right away: there is no elevator. You go up on foot, step by step, in a staircase that has kept the narrow proportions of 17th-century buildings. For a light stay or a weekend without too much luggage, this is part of the neighborhood’s slightly rough charm. For others, it is better to ask right away for a room on the lower floors.

When you push open the door to a room, the decor remains simple, almost austere: a bed, a bathroom with a hairdryer, a television, wifi that works without a hitch. Nothing ostentatious, but everything you need to sleep and leave early the next day. Some rooms face rue Saint-Antoine, with double glazing to soften the passage of buses and morning deliveries; others overlook the inner courtyard, quieter and cooler in summer.

In the evening, going back down, you find that same rue Saint-Antoine that never quite sleeps: the terraces of Place du Marché-Sainte-Catherine five minutes away, the neighborhood bars coming to life, Place des Vosges just a few steps away for one last walk before heading back. Bastille and its canal remain within walking distance, without having to take out the map.

A tip for the morning: ask for a courtyard-facing room if you plan to sleep in; rue Saint-Antoine wakes early, with shops opening their shutters from seven o’clock.
