B&B Hôtel Paris Porte de la Villette. As you step out of Corentin Cariou metro station, you quickly spot the red-and-white sign, set on the edge of the 19th arrondissement, just a stone’s throw from the Bassin de la Villette.

Line 7 gets you here in no time from Gare de l’Est. Tram T3b runs along the canal just opposite. You can head north of Paris without ever getting close to the ring road.

Reception never sleeps. A safe, luggage storage, a few newspapers left on a coffee table: nothing spectacular, but everything you need to drop off your bags without a second thought.

Upstairs, the rooms deliver on their promises without overdoing it. The air conditioning is individually adjustable room by room. The Bultex bedding has that understated merit of never making itself noticed, which, for a hotel bed, is already a compliment. In the evening, the flat-screen TV gets Canal+ for those who would rather stay warm than head back out.

You don’t come here for views of the zinc rooftops of postcard Paris. The canal-side 19th has its own character: converted warehouses, brick facades, the silhouette of the Géode in the distance. It is a Paris to be discovered rather than admired from the window.

Morning changes the atmosphere on the ground floor. The breakfast buffet, served for an extra few euros, focuses on the hot food station and the toast bar. Nothing stiff or formal. You’ll find neighborhood regulars grabbing coffee on the go, and travelers heading to the Cité des Sciences or the Philharmonie, just a few stops away.

Parking is also available for an additional charge. One more line on the bill, admittedly. But for anyone arriving by car in the 19th and dreading the endless loop of driving around, knowing that a secure spot is waiting behind the gate is well worth the asking price.

At the end of the day, when the children still have energy to burn before dinner, the open-air swimming area at the Bassin de la Villette, free and supervised in summer, is just a few minutes away on foot. A good way to end the day without taking the metro again.
