At 22 rue de Buci, between Boulevard Saint-Germain and the Seine quays, Hôtel de Buci overlooks one of the liveliest streets in the 6th arrondissement. People often arrive here by chance, wandering between the greengrocers’ stalls and the shop windows on the street, and push open a door that looks unremarkable.

Inside, the mood changes immediately. Brown oak parquet, the rounded forms of a contemporary bookcase, a Philippe Hurel sofa: it feels less like entering a hotel than stepping into someone’s home. That someone would have a marked taste for the 18th century and the fabrics that preserve its memory.

The winter garden, beneath its glass roof, serves as the focal point of the whole day. In the morning, it is where breakfast is enjoyed under filtered light, between tea and pastries. Later on, the same tables host a cocktail or a reading break, in alcoves that break the room into small territories. In the evening, a large communal table gathers those who prefer to share their meal rather than dine alone in their corner.

The rooms, 19 in all, plus five suites, follow the same 18th-century theme. The fabrics come from Brunschwig & Fils, a company with more than a century of history, and some reproduce a very specific blue, invented in 1752 by the Royal Manufacture of Sèvres for Catherine II of Russia. A word about the sizes: the classic rooms, around 14m², remain compact. That is hardly surprising in an old building in the 6th arrondissement, where every square meter comes at a premium, but those who like to spread out their belongings will be better off choosing a Junior Suite or a Signature Suite, which are more spacious. Another detail to know before booking: rue de Buci is lively early and late, with shops and terraces. For a truly quiet night, it is better to request a room facing the courtyard.

In the basement, open since April 2024, there is a fully private spa. Heated pool, sauna, treatment room: the space is reserved in 45-minute slots, giving enough time to alternate hot and cold rituals, between sauna and a cool shower, with no one else sharing the space. Waxed concrete, Zellige tiles, a ceiling covered in aluminum and gold leaf: the decor makes no pretence about its materials. Treatments use Absolution products, a French organic-certified brand.

Heading back toward the street, Saint-Germain-des-Prés returns, with its galleries, boutiques, and the Seine just a few minutes away on foot. The nearest metro station makes the rest of Paris easy to reach.

One final tip for those who do not want to rush in the morning: late check-out, until 1 p.m., is easy to arrange at reception. Enough to enjoy the winter garden one last time before handing back the keys.
