Today, it houses greengrocer stalls, a music conservatory, a municipal swimming pool, and, in recent years, brands such as Apple and Uniqlo, wedged in among the older shops. Three generations of the same family have taken turns behind the hotel desk.

You can feel it in the rooms. Nothing seems designed to look like the room next door: the wall fabrics and wallpapers come from the Pierre Frey house, and depending on the floor you may find a floral print, a toile de Jouy, stripes, or a bolder color. One word of warning, though: the photos on the website do not always match reality; the establishment admits as much itself, as some rooms have changed their decor since the last photo shoot. A phone call before booking remains the best way to know which print you’ll be sleeping in.

Eighteen rooms overlook the street, with Saint-Sulpice Church towers in view. The ten others look onto a courtyard or small inner courtyard. The neighborhood comes alive around the market, from the opening of the stalls in the morning until the terraces fill up in the evening: for anyone who sleeps late or sleeps poorly, it is best to request a courtyard-facing room when booking.

The rooms remain small, around ten square meters for the most modest ones, a little more for the higher categories. Air conditioning runs throughout, useful on heavy summer nights. The showers are spotless, and some bathrooms have a bathtub. The junior suites, the largest in the hotel, separate the bedroom from the sitting room and can accommodate three people. The courtyard twin rooms offer two single beds for two friends or two colleagues traveling together. The superior doubles gain a few extra meters on the street side, sometimes with a view that lands right on the market and the bell tower.

On the ground floor, the wood-paneled lobby plays a double role, as a lounge and a small bar, with a decorative fireplace framed by bookshelves and a seating area for catching your breath between visits. The reception desk stays open day and night; a safe is available there for valuables, and luggage storage helps with late departures. There is an elevator, but it remains tiny—one suitcase at a time, at most—which can make life difficult for those carrying a lot of luggage.

Breakfast is available at an extra cost, as a buffet in the dining room or as a continental tray in the room for those who prefer to linger under the covers. Coffee is included in the rate. Some guests prefer to head straight to the neighborhood bakery, equally good and cheaper.

Outside, everything is within walking distance. The Jardin du Luxembourg on one side, the Seine quays on the other, the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre within a good walk. Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots are not far, nor are Saint-Germain-des-Prés Church, Notre-Dame, or Sainte-Chapelle. Mabillon station is just a few steps away, and Saint-Germain-des-Prés station is three minutes away.

If you head out early in the morning, the Saint-Germain market opens its stalls before most of the neighborhood cafés: enough to grab a coffee quickly before the street fills up.
