Hotel Beaurepaire, rue Albert Thomas, in the 10th arrondissement. Turn your back on Place de la République, and the street quiets down almost immediately, which is already a pleasant surprise for a hotel just steps from such a lively crossroads.

The ground floor sets the tone: a reception area that has kept its old furniture, almost thrifted, contrasting with the rest, which is decidedly contemporary. You are welcomed without fuss, often with an extra word about the neighborhood, and sometimes with a room offered one floor higher than expected.

To go up, you have to deal with the elevator, tiny, the kind that can only fit one person and a carry-on bag at a time. Many end up taking the stairs, which at least has the merit of revealing the colors that change from landing to landing: an orange bedspread here, deep blue curtains two floors up, never the same choice twice.

The rooms, renovated in 2017, go for a bright and simple look. Natural light, a bathroom entirely tiled in white, a capsule coffee machine on the desk for those who want to get a head start on their morning before heading down. The spaces remain modest—this is Paris—and those traveling with a lot of luggage, or who are over 6'3", will have to make do with limited room, especially in the bathroom.

In the morning, head to the breakfast room, with red and black chairs and an atmosphere that wakes you up more reliably than coffee. Buffet served until 10:15 a.m. on weekdays, a little later on weekends, and it can also be brought up to your room for late risers.

Outside, the Canal Saint-Martin is just a few minutes’ walk away, République station is 300 meters away, and Gare du Nord can be reached in twenty minutes on foot.

When you leave, turn left and then left again: the neighborhood bakery opens at 7 a.m., well before the hotel breakfast buffet.
