The Hôtel Garden Saint Martin République occupies a quiet street in Paris’s 10th arrondissement, five minutes from Place de la République and the Canal Saint-Martin. It is often reached on foot from Gare de l’Est or Gare du Nord, cutting through Rue de Marseille to reach Quai de Valmy.

Reception never closes. A team that speaks English, Spanish, and Italian welcomes travelers at any hour, recommends a neighborhood restaurant or a place for the Caveau de la République, just steps away.

On the ground floor, a small lounge separates the street from the elevator. There is a drinks machine for cold beverages, coffee or tea served on request, a few newspapers, and a deck of cards left on the coffee table. Guests browse the neighborhood flyers there before heading off on foot to the Marais or Bastille.

The 32 rooms are spread across the floors, some facing the street, others the quieter inner courtyard. Double glazing, soundproofing, understated contemporary decor. On the top floor, the rooms take on a different character. Under the eaves, they open onto the rooftops of Paris and, in places, onto the canal. The elevator does not go that far: the last steps must be climbed on foot. One room, lower down, remains accessible to guests with reduced mobility, without that drawback.

From the morning, breakfast is served in a room overlooking the flowered patio, between 7 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. In summer, the door stays open and you hear more birds than the street. There is fresh bread, pastries, cheese and cold cuts, a few dried fruits and compotes, with organic or fair-trade products mixed in among the classics. Hot drinks are brought directly to the table.

For those arriving by car, there is no on-site parking. A paid, supervised public parking lot is just steps away, more than enough for one or two nights without giving it much thought.

Around the hotel, Quai de Valmy and its cafés, Rue Beaurepaire and its shops, Place de la République five minutes away on foot. The Centre Pompidou, the Atelier des Lumières, and the squares of the Marais can all be reached without taking the метро, even if Jacques Bonsergent station on line 5 remains useful on rainy days.

One last tip, for the morning: ask for a courtyard-facing room if you like to have your coffee in peace before the street wakes up.
