The Mandarin Oriental Lutetia has stood in Paris since 1910, on the corner of Boulevard Raspail and Rue de Sèvres, in the 6th arrondissement. Originally built to accommodate guests of the nearby Bon Marché, it has made it through the century without ever leaving this address. Four years of work later, it reopened in 2025 under the Mandarin Oriental banner, with Jean-Michel Wilmotte in charge of the renovation.

As soon as you step inside, the pace changes immediately. A smile, a coat gently taken, a few words exchanged at the reception desk. The eye then rises to the fresco-painted dome, before dropping back down to the floral-patterned floor leading to the gilded counter. The furnishings play on two eras at once, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, without ever seeming to choose between the two.

Upstairs, the 184 rooms and suites adopt a midnight-blue palette and generous proportions for a Paris hotel. The white marble bathrooms are equipped with deep bathtubs and Chopard products. From some balconies, the view stretches over the rooftops of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and sometimes as far as the Eiffel Tower depending on the floor. One caveat to know before booking: rooms that face directly onto Boulevard Raspail pick up some of the traffic from the intersection, especially during the day. It is better to request a room facing the courtyard or Rue de Sèvres for a quieter night's sleep.

On the ground floor, three addresses complement one another. Bar Joséphine, named after Joséphine Baker, who once frequented the place, blends rediscovered frescoes with contemporary lines. A little further on, Bar Aristide cultivates a piano-bar atmosphere, Charleston sofas, and live music on certain evenings. The Saint-Germain restaurant, beneath its glass roof designed by Fabrice Hyber, serves everything from late breakfast to dinner, while Brasserie Lutetia remains the neighborhood regulars’ haunt for a hearty weekend brunch.

Breakfast deserves a special mention. Served in the room, it arrives generous and on time, with pastries, charcuterie, and freshly squeezed juices. At the Brasserie, the set menu can also be enjoyed on the semi-outdoor terrace. Note that it is not included in the room rate, which is still common for a property of this standard but is worth keeping in mind when booking.

The basement holds the best surprise for last. You go down as if into a marble-lined cave, columns included, to a 17-meter pool lit with turquoise reflections. Hammam, sauna, hydrotherapy pool: enough to make you forget the street above for a good hour.

One last detail, for those who like to swim in peace: the pool opens early in the morning, before breakfast guests flood the space. A few laps at 7 a.m., and the rest of the day begins differently.
