citizenM Paris Champs-Élysées occupies a 1970s building on Rue La Boétie, a one-minute walk from the avenue that gives the district its name. You open the door and step straight into a large lounge, closer to a New York loft than a classic hotel lobby: low sofas, works by JR and Sarah Morris hanging on the walls, a few prints by Frank Horvat. Some guests are working on an iMac, others are leafing through a book while waiting for check-in time.

Check-in is done at a kiosk or via the app, in a matter of seconds. No front desk, no queue. You collect your key and head straight up.

The 151 rooms are all alike, down to the centimeter: 14 square meters, a king-size bed, a tablet that controls the lights, blinds and television. This identical format has one merit, consistency, but it is worth knowing before booking: if you are looking for a family room or a bit more space for a longer stay, this is not what the hotel offers. Here, every square meter is designed for one or two people, with a rain shower and a MoodPad that adjusts the light and bathroom scent according to the mood of the moment.

On the ground floor, canteenM operates twenty-four hours a day. Coffee made by a barista from dawn, crusty bread, hot dishes at lunchtime, cocktails and draught beer once night falls. The breakfast buffet, served from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., costs extra: a detail to keep in mind if the displayed rate seemed particularly appealing.

At the end of the day, head to the top floor. CloudM, the rooftop bar, opens onto the rooftops of the 8th arrondissement and, in clear weather, onto the Eiffel Tower in the distance. With a drink in hand, you can watch the light change on the surrounding Haussmann-style buildings.

On the practical side, the hotel does not have on-site parking: you will need to park at the Indigo Champs-Élysées car park, a few streets away. For the rest, everything is within walking distance. Franklin D. Roosevelt metro station is two minutes away, and the Arc de Triomphe a little over ten.

One last tip: go up to the rooftop just before sunset rather than after dinner. The light is more beautiful there and there is still room on the terrace.
