Maison Souquet, on rue de Bruxelles, in the ninth arrondissement. Two red lanterns mark the entrance, as if lifted from a Toulouse-Lautrec poster. From the street, one can hardly guess what follows. The facade remains understated, almost secret, just a few minutes from the Moulin Rouge and Place de Clichy.

You push open the door and the decor changes century. The lobby opens onto a series of connected salons, designed by Jacques Garcia. The first extends the entrance: late-nineteenth-century wood paneling, dismantled from a Brussels townhouse and then reassembled here, lit by a Murano glass chandelier. It brings to mind a Parisian salon that has crossed time without losing its gilding.

The second salon is organized around a library and a dark marble fireplace. Upholstered armchairs covered in red velvet gather around an antique guéridon. That is where the bar is hidden, where cocktails named after courtesans are served. Further on, a third salon, opening onto a narrow patio favored by smokers, offers low banquettes for lingering into the evening.

Upstairs, twenty rooms, including six suites, each bear the name of a Belle Époque figure: La Païva, Liane de Pougy, La Castiglione, La Belle Otero. Each develops its own inspiration, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, or Napoléon III, with fabrics chosen from the major French publishers and nude paintings hung on the walls. The beds, framed by dark bedside tables, are dressed in generous bedding, and the bathrooms tuck Hermès products into their drawers.

One point is worth noting before booking: some rooms face an inner courtyard rather than the street, which limits the view but in return ensures welcome quiet at night. Another detail to know is that the building, dating from the early last century, was not designed to multiply electrical outlets: it is better to bring a power strip if you travel with several devices, even though the staff will gladly help on request.

In the basement, the Salon d’Eau awaits, almost private. A cobalt-blue vault, scattered with gold-leaf stars, rises above a ten-meter pool. Each guest gets a one-hour slot every day to enjoy the hammam and the pool alone: no shared changing room, no waiting, just a key picked up at reception.

As for dining, there is no restaurant as such, but there is a menu of shared plates served in the library lounge or the winter garden: creamy burrata, pesto penne, warm blinis accompanied by salmon roe. The neighborhood, between Pigalle and Montmartre, more than makes up for it with its own tables, just steps away.

In the morning, breakfast is served in the room or in the small ground-floor lounge, between seven and eleven o’clock. Best to go late, when the house is still quiet and the subdued light does not need to pretend.
