The Sofitel Le Scribe Paris Opéra has occupied this address for more than a century, on a street that bears its name, a stone’s throw from the Palais Garnier. You push open the door. The lobby grabs you right away: high moldings, chandeliers, a fireplace that burns for much of the year in the lobby. A few meters farther on, this very building saw the Lumière brothers project their first moving images before a paying audience in 1895, in what was then the Grand Café. You come across this memory without it being displayed anywhere. You only have to look up at the dark wood paneling of the bar to feel it.

The Bar du Scribe, appropriately, in a half-moon shape, keeps a “men’s club” spirit: deep armchairs, a menu of classic cocktails. Writers, filmmakers, and a few journalists have settled there over the decades. The staff are happy to share a few anecdotes if the conversation lends itself to it. A little farther on, beneath the glass roof, the Rivages restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine by Denis Rippa. Upstairs, the 201 rooms and suites, redesigned by designer Tristan Auer in 2020, aim for the feel of a Haussmann-style apartment rather than a hotel room: working fireplace in some categories, large walk-in closet, thick carpet. The entry-level categories remain compact. Travelers with a lot of luggage quickly notice that it takes a bit of Tetris to open a suitcase without climbing onto the bed. Nothing unmanageable, but it is better to know this before arriving with two carry-ons and a shopping bag. In return, the soundproofing is impressive: even on the street side, the windows filter out almost all traffic noise.

In the morning, the breakfast buffet is served in the basement, in a room without daylight, designed more for conviviality than for the view. The selection, however, does not disappoint: pastries, eggs made to order, freshly squeezed juices, and attentive staff who remember the habits of regular guests. It can also be brought up to your room, champagne included for late risers who prefer to have it in a bathrobe facing the rooftops of Paris.

On the 6th floor, the spa remains discreet: hammam, a few treatment rooms. The gym is more modest than the brochure suggests, with a single cardio machine and two or three dumbbells. Enough for a short workout before heading out sightseeing. Not for a full training session.

As for the location, it leaves nothing to be desired. The entrance is 200 meters from the Palais Garnier, 500 meters from Place Vendôme, and Galeries Lafayette are just a few minutes away on foot. The Opéra station, directly opposite, serves several metro lines.

The staff often come up in guest feedback, names cited one by one, at the front desk, the concierge, the bar. A sign of service that takes the time to remember faces. Check-out is straightforward; requests for a late departure are usually granted depending on the day’s occupancy.

One detail for the morning: each room has a free capsule coffee machine, unlike the minibar, which remains chargeable. Enough to wait with a coffee before room service arrives, on a Sunday when you linger a little before brunch under the glass roof.
